The University of San Francisco (USF) is a Jesuit university in San Francisco, California. You might be wondering with the word Jesuit if you are not a Christian. Basically, it’s a scholarly religious congregation of the Catholic Church which was originated in the 16th century, the members of this society are known as Jesuits.

The university was established in October 1855. Anthony Maraschi, S.J was the one behind this university. He arrived in San Francisco as an Italian Immigrant in 1854.

In the next year, he borrowed more than $11,000 for the establishment of Jesuit Church, and a school.

When the original college, known as St. Ignatius Academy, opened its doors to its first class, three students showed up—that number grew to 65 by 1858. The State of California granted the college a charter in 1859.
