It is a private research university In Durham, North Carolina, and the duke was started as Brown’s Schoolhouse in 1838.
When North Carolina issued them a chartered in 1841, the school then became a Union Institute Academy.
The academy was renamed as Normal College in 1851, and then Trinity College in 1859, just because of the support from the Methodist Church.
After two decades, the trinity college moved to Durham, and the reason for shifting to Durham was all because of the generosity of Julian S. Carr and Washington Duke, Both of them were Methodists and had grown their wealth by running the business of Tobacco, and electrical Industries.
In 1892, Carr donated land for the original Durham Campus, which is also commonly known as East Campus.
At the meantime, Washington Duke gave the school $85,000 for the starting endowment and the construction costs.
There were a lot of other donations which the university receives from them in the year 1896, 1899, and 1900 which were the total of $100,000 at that time.
