The university was established in 1636 with the vote of the general court of the Massachusetts Bay colony. The name was named as Harvard college in 1639, because of an alumnus of the University of Cambridge John Harvard. He left half of his income and library for this institution.
There is a statue of John Harvard in the university, and it is the best-known part of the landmark of this university.
